Death Sonnet

Monday, December 7th, 2009

was looking through some old stuff and found this, I think I wrote it in 2004. I got a kick out of it. why did I write a sonnet?

posted 12/7 in honor of Pearl Harbor Day

Another body lies in the graveyard
Again, humble life is wasted away
The tan skin of her body has been marred
Nevermore shall she see another day.
Once more a man is lying near, lifeless
Killed in innocence but caught in war
Seems now that no one knows, life is priceless
But, it is our nature to settle the score.
Why has it become so easy to kill?
Perceptions of life have gone askew.
Perhaps, it is a necessary evil,
For every human will someday pay his due.
Always left to ponder our last breath…
This life is ended quickly – thank you, Death.

this is a poem I wrote about a year and a half ago. I didn’t think it was very good then but on second thought, I like it.

I hear my leader talking
change, true change, he says
my hand extends
the coins fall

men knock at my door
we will protect you, they say
your safety is at stake
my protection is gone

my rights wither away
like grapes on an unkempt vine
the promise of their sweetness is gone

my fate is realized
I am dying

for years I continue
down this path to days of yore
someone tried to warn me once
but the sun had already blinded me
I did not know the danger in its rays

my will to go on has faded
what motive have I?
the fruits of my labor are not mine

all at once, we remember
we are America
liberty or death was not just a quote
it is a rally call, and we rally

but is it too late?
to the capital we march
the streets are filled with pitchforks
this monster is hideous, this monster must die
why did we write this book?

the insurgents are us
the enemy are strong
but our strength is in numbers
liberty or death, we cry again
we cry in pain

my son comes home without me
his mother weeps bittersweet tears
our great leader has fallen
with him, the chains
we have come full circle
the wine tastes sweet again
America is free
